Inhalt
This course offers a chronological and spatial analysis of the development of cross-in-square architecture, with a particular focus on Eastern Europe. This type of Byzantine church architecture, originating and spreading in the 10th–11th centuries, became a defining form in Eastern Christianity, gaining prominence in Orthodox regions and remaining a symbol of the area into the 21st century. During imperial periods, especially in the Russian Empire, cross-in-square churches marked the expansion and presence of Orthodoxy. Accordingly, particular attention will be given to how this architectural form differentiates denominations in border regions. Historiographical debates on the 'national' and 'universal' nature of this architectural form will be discussed as part of the course. One of the aims of the course is to introduce students to various methodological approaches to architectural analysis, which are applicable to the analysis of other types of architecture. These include iconographic, formal, and architectural-archaeological analyses.Termine
